“My first instinct was not fear. It was: I need to make sure I don’t drop the ball at work.” Amy Margolies, on the moment that changed everything
About the book
In August 2019, eight weeks pregnant with her third child, Amy Margolies was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was Global Head of Business for YouTube BrandConnect, twelve years into her career at Google.
She had a lumpectomy at the start of her second trimester, and then did what she’d been trained to do: she went straight back to work. It held until a client meeting in Lower Manhattan, when she smiled through the tears on the sidewalk and told her team the only true thing she had left: “I don’t think I can do this right now.”
Now What is about that reflex: why so many high-achieving women are trained to perform through anything, what it costs, and what it looks like to unlearn it. Amy tells it through the voice memos, social posts, and real text messages she kept at the time.
